Final Score: Quarry Bank 206 – Meadowbank 171
On a bright and competitive afternoon of bowls, Quarry Bank turned on the style to defeat Meadowbank 206–171 in their latest Norman Cup fixture. From the opening ends, Quarry Bank showed intent and quality, with several players delivering standout performances in front of a supportive home crowd.
Andy Pearson got Quarry Bank off to the perfect start with a confident 21–11 win over David Dickenson. Calm and in control throughout, Pearson never looked in danger as he eased to victory.
Dave Leigh—nicknamed ‘Gandhi’ by his teammates—followed with a masterclass, beating Phil Wingfield 21–8. Leigh’s precision and calm demeanour made it look effortless, as he handed out what could only be described as a free lesson in green craft.
Steve Gavin then built on the early momentum. After a slow start, he quickly took command and saw off Andy Ward 21–17 in a match he controlled for most of the second half.
Jim Burgess was another steady hand, securing a 21–17 win over Graham Done. Despite a questionable "you're on" shout from the Meadowbank camp that briefly threw off his rhythm, Burgess kept his composure and finished strongly.
Meadowbank hit back in the middle of the card. John Gethins, trying a different set of bowls, never found his usual rhythm and lost 10–21 to a sharp Mark Adkins.
Todd Evans also struggled, still feeling the effects of two games the day before. He went down 8–21 to Ivan Wilkinson, who took control early and never let up.
Any hopes of a Meadowbank comeback were quickly dashed as Quarry Bank’s back end stepped up with a trio of dominant displays.
Paul Drury saw off Jake Pendelton 21–13 in a composed and clinical performance. ‘The Duke’ soaked up the pressure and played with authority, keeping his opponent off balance throughout.
Pete Ogiliev, sporting a new pair of glasses, turned in one of his most confident games of the season. His 21–14 win over Scott Rowland was as clear as his vision—precise and assured.
Dave Baskerville then delivered the biggest win of the day, cruising past Ben Dickenson 21–5. Known as ‘The Hound’, Baskerville was never in trouble and barely needed to get out of second gear.
The day was rounded off with a statement performance from Sean Chappell, who swept aside Andy Noden 21–4 in a display full of confidence, class, and style.
Captains Man of the Match - Dave Leigh, great perfromance
Brunner Cup Preliminary Round – A Thrilling Victory for Quarry Bank
This weekend marked the preliminary round of the prestigious Brunner Cup, and Quarry Bank found themselves drawn against a tough opponent in former champions Tixall BC. It was always going to be a testing encounter, and the match didn’t disappoint, delivering drama, tension, and some outstanding individual performances.
The game got underway with Ainsley Johnson taking to the green first. Things couldn’t have started worse—he quickly found himself 13–0 down and it looked like it might be a quick defeat. However, once he got hold of the jack, the momentum shifted. Ainsley fought back valiantly, stringing together end after end in a remarkable comeback. Though he narrowly lost out 21–19, his grit and determination set the tone for what would become a hard-fought contest.
Steve Gavin stepped up next and produced a solid, composed performance to earn a 21–18 win, showing great control throughout. Sean Chappell followed with a steady game of his own, keeping things tight and eventually pulling away to secure a 21–12 victory—an excellent display of consistency and patience.
As the second four took to the green, it was a mixed bag of results. Ian Dalton struggled to find his rhythm and fell to a 21–12 defeat. Similarly, Martin Ogiliev found it hard going against tough opposition and lost 21–15 despite moments of promise. Fortunately, Steve Baskerville turned the tide again with a gritty and composed performance, edging a close game 21–19.
But the highlight of the round—and the clear Man of the Match—was Malc Kettle. Paired against a formidable opponent in Dave McDermott, Malc delivered an incredible display of precision and control under pressure. In a match that went down to the wire, Malc emerged victorious 21–19, capping off what was arguably his best performance in recent memory.
The final four players were left with it all to play for. The start wasn’t ideal, as John Gethins Struggled to find form and came off with loss by 14. But hope was reignited thanks to Todd Evans, who played with calm assurance and earned a convincing 21–12 win, keeping us right in the mix.
With two games left on the green, the overall match was perfectly balanced—everything came down to these final ends. Dave Baskerville, under enormous pressure, delivered a clutch performance, controlling the pace and securing a crucial 21–11 win. That left Chris Eaton needing at least 12 points for the team to seal the overall victory. At one stage, he was trailing 17–10, and the tension was palpable—but Chris dug deep, held his nerve, and pushed on to reach 13. That small margin was just enough to tip the scales in our favour.
Final result: Quarry Bank win by 2
